Hello/Intro Bush VisitReturn to index of stories... |
Hello. I'm Beth Carroll. Welcome to New Hampshire Outlook. President Bush will accept his party's nomination Thursday night at the Republican National Convention. But he's certainly not waiting for the convention to make his case for re-election. On Monday, the President visited Nashua for a rally. It was billed as a question and answer session - although with audience members picked by invitation-only, most of the questions were statements of support for the president. But, It was a different story outside the rally. |

A woman was arrsted for running into the path of the president's motorcade, a man was charged with throwing an egg at the motorcade and another man was charged with assault for allegedly trying to pull a Secret Service agent away from the alleged egg-thrower. |

3 people were arrested during President Bush's New Hampshire visit. Thursday night President Bush will have an opportunity to win over his detractors. Pollsters will be hard at work trying to gauge his performance with likely voters. Polls and the Public Opinion they measure are an intergral part of the political process. They inform, influence debate, the economy, even social trends. As pollsters like to put it, their work provides a sort of national look in the mirror. To learn more about Polling -- we turned to Andy Smith of the UNH survey center. |

Political conventions have long served the purpose of informing voters --and providing a shared American experience. Modern day conventions have become such scripted events -- they provide no real news, little drama -- and consequently less coverage. So, we thought we'd take a look back at some of the more memorable moments from Republican conventions of years past. |

sot: "But it was too little too late…this time we're going to win." In 19-76, the Republicans found themselves in Kansas City. President Ford edged out Ronald Reagan that year-- the last closely contested Republican Convention. Four years later, it was 19-80 and on to Detroit where Ronald Reagan did become the nominee, bringing with him a new era of conservatism to the G-O-P. After considering President Ford as a vice presidential nominee, Reagan settled on George Bush, his strongeset challenger during the primary. The two went on to win in November. President Ronald Reagan-- riding a wave of popularity-- faced no serious primary opposition and was renominated easily during the 19-84 G-O-P convention in Dallas. George Bush was also renominated as Vice President. They easily won re-election. After eight years as Ronald Reagan's vice president, George Bush became the Republican nominee in 19-88 in New Orleans. Bush's choice --of then little-known Indiana Senator Dan Quale as his running mate-- came as a surprise. They later won the white House. In 19-92, George Bush and Dan Quayle were again nominated for president and vice president during their party's convention in Houston. But they lost in the general election. In 19-96, Former Kansas Senator Bob Dole was rewarded for many years of G-O-P service with the presidential nomination. Dole picked Jack Kemp as his vice president. Dole's wife provided one of the most memorable highlights of the convention when she left the podium and strolled through the audience on the convention floor to deliver her address. Republicans Dole and Kemp couldn't beat incumbent President Clinton in November. In 2000, another Bush headlined the Republican National Convention. Then Texas Governor George W. Bush -- President George Bush's son-- picked up his party's nomination for president. |

President Bush will be renominated Thursday night in New York City. Republicans hope the convention will give the Bush-Cheney ticket a boost and an eventual win over John Kerry in November. |
